Local  – Hull and East Riding

Women Of Words

Women Of Words is a fabulous event where female performers of spoken word, prose, song and drama come to perform their work. It features an open mic style and has special guests. Male audience members are very welcome to come and support the poetry, prose, story-telling and songs of the all-female guests and open micers. Held at Kardomah94 2-4pm, on the first Wednesday of every month.



Poems Save Lives

Poems Save Lives is a space that usually happens every two weeks at GROUND gallery and community arts space where everyone and anyone is welcome. Come and share in poems that means something important to you. Come just to have a cup of tea and listen or come to read poems, either you’re own or those that have spoken to you.

Away with Words

A spoken word evening that welcomes all kinds of performance; poetry, comedy, theatre, sketches, storytelling, prose and anything else!

Currently based at – Off The Road Live Lounge, 246 Spring Bank West Hull  on the third Thursday of every month. All events are free.


Wrecking Ball Press

Our local publishing house in Hull. They accept submissions from novels to a single poem. They promise to get back to everyone!


Valley Press

An independent publishers based in Scarborough, who open for submissions for all kinds of writing at various points throughout the year.


The LIL Drama Company

A new drama company in Hull inspired by the life and incredible story of Lillian Bilocca who are producing plays, events and offering training for writers, actors and artists.




A fantastic free mentoring project that is offered by professional literary women for talented and up-and-coming female writers who would otherwise find it difficult to access similar opportunities.


New Writing North 

Established in 1996 to support writers in the north of England to fulfil their creative ambitions. The website has details of awards and prizes, festivals, events and programmes mainly around Newcastle and surrounding.



Arvon have centres around England and offer residential programmes for every kind of writing with tutoring from some of the top writers in the country. They also offer an easy-to-apply-for grant scheme for people on a low income. 90% of the people who apply receive something towards the cost of their course.
